      As compared to A210 "Aquila" Czech "Lambada" of "URBAN-AIR s.r.o." company exists not only virtually, but it really flys. Last year it even won the first price at the World Championship in Hungary among ultralights. There is nothing to boast of world sport achivements of Czech "ATEC v.o.s." company's ultralight "Zephyr", but as for its appearences and characteristics this airplane has much in common with "Lambada". As for how similar they are both by appearence and performance characteristics you can judge by pictures and table data.
      If performance characteristics of A-210 design justify hopes, "Aquila" will be a rather serious competitor for Austrian airplanes of "Diamond aircraft" company, which is not going to lose at the market and demonstrated two new aircraft at "AERO'99". They are four-seater DA 40-180 "Diamond Star" and two-seater "Katana 100".

      Among "AERO'99" exhibits there was one more two-seat plastic low-wing monoplane of French "Bulaero" company. Painted in colors of one African tribe, it got a suitable name "ZuLu". In the booklet and at the colorfull panel there was emphasized that the plane is intended to be used only at the African continent. It has simple equipment and GPS, folding wing, major diameter undercarriage, a trailer for taking the knocked-down plane trough savanna ( pictures of the airplane with waterfalls and baobabs at the background).

      No doubts, the attention of the guests and participants at the airshow couldn't be but attracted by the display and the goods of the German "Dyn Aero Doess GmbH". Anyhow it had to be this way, because the company offers two-seat aircraft MCR 01, designed by a talented tandem of designers M.Colomban-C.Robin. Three models of MCR 01 VLA-Kit, MCR 01 VLA-Club-Kit and MCR 01 UL were added by MCR 01 with original slot wing tips which aim to decrease wing vortex drag (increase effective aspect ratio). What is the result of the designers' work may be judged by the table data.

      As we see at the top his designer's work M.Colomban decided to make some experiments with specific wing loading and various shape of wing tip. He must have been sure that there is no need to reach high speed only by the increase of max wing loading. The airplane with more perfect wing from the point of view of aerodynamics despite larger wing area becomes as speedy, but safer. Increase of the area and effective wing aspect ratio allows to expand the speed range, increase the rate of climb. At the same time maximum speed remains quite satisfactory for high-speed flight fans. These conclusions must be paid attention to by the fans of "Cricri", which shows up now and then among those who make airplanes themselves preoccupied by the idea of creating a miniture vehicle with fantastic speed. At best they finish with blue eyes and a fortune of debts.

      However, this passion for aircraft creativity is incurible. And many designers are not even convinced either by advice of others or by their own experience. Some experiment with wings, others with power plant, the rest with basic configuration. The designers of HB 204 "Tornado" aircraft from "HB Flugtechnik Ges.m.b.H"company may belong to such kind of experimenters.
      According to the company booklet "Tornado" has a flying prototype, that is a high wing monoplane with T-tail and pusher propeller, turning around the fuselage frame. This is not the only aircraft of the company. There is a picture of an ordinary two-seat Kit, a low wing monoplane HB 207 "Alfa" with a five-blade tractor propeller ("Porsche" engine with capacity of 110 hp, cruise speed of 250 km/h) near the experimental vehicle. HB 204 was taken to the pavilion, though "Tornado" was supposed to be a favorite of the heaven thanks to aircraft flight characteristics.

      I have no idea how everything turns out, but "Tornado" designers unlike M.Colombana are not quite sure about the fact that large unit load and original power plant not only ensure high speed, but also become the reason of various problems. Nevertheless presented aircraft flight characteristics are inpressionable.
      Not all the participans of the airshow stive for original engineering solution. However classic schemes prevail. The examples of quality, safety and beauty of classical ultralights are Czech aircraft of " TL Ultralight" of German "Martin Wezel Flugzeugtechnik " in Friedrichshafen. "TL 232 "Condor plus " of this company is well known for our readers. We wrote about it in "GA". One aircraft of this type is now operating in Ukraine. Having changed two-seater high wing brased monoplane TL 96 "Star" with fixed wing with well-shaped tips, Czech constructors not only improved the design, but also increased aircraft performance characteristics. Naturally the basic cost of a new aircraft went up as well.

      At the last airshow Czech designers of ultralights demonstrated a low wing monoplane "Kappa" and a high wing brased monoplane-tandem "Tulak" of "LET MONT", which is being offered at the German market with different engines, from Rotax 503 to Rotax 912 and from "Verner Motors" to "Limbach Motors". The total price of С Rotax 503 "Tulak", completely ready for flight will make up 58451 DM.

      Not to make our readers think that only American, French and Czech aircraft, made of composite materials mostly prevail at "AERO'99". It's necessary to admit that a popular ultralight "Ikarus C22" type of German "Ikarus Comko" popular in the late 80-s - in the early 90-s is still around. Perhaps the most perfect specimen of this aircraft group is "JetFox 97" of Italian "EuroALA".
      But why am I still talking of ultralights? Judging by booklets and video which was taken by our correspondent in Friedrichshafen at "AERO'99", there were many interesting exhibits both among light multi-purpose and business aircraft and helicopter as well. There is also much to say about pavilions and displays where gliders, trikes, paramotors, engines, devices and accessories were exhibited. But the volume of the journal article is limited and we lack the time for the topic sequel. Moreover right after the airshow was over the editorial staff survived the second "Chernobyl calamity". On April, 26 all the computers with the journal issue was affected by a Win95.CIH virus. The least significant tragedy was the loss of the file with the text ready for the make-up of April issue of the journal. And the biggest harm was connected with the damage of the data bank with our readers' addresses and material for "GA" catalog . That's why, everything you have just read is only a little part of the information our corespondent Rodion Nikolyan handed over having returned from Friedrichshafen.
